Terezín is situated about 48 km norteast of Prague, close to the town of Litomeřice.
It was originaly build as a military fortress town with adjoining prison by Josef II, who named it after his mother Maria Teresa. The role of this fortress was to protect the Czech lands from northeast, however it was never attacked by enemy and is more know in our history from the WW II period, when the Nazis turned it into a transit concentration camp. The so called „Large Fortress“ became the Jewish ghetto and the „Small Fortress“ was turned into a Gestapo prison.
